A Management Consultant, called I.V.Lee, approached the president of a small but ambitious steel company. He told the president that he knew of ways to increase his company's efficiency and profitability by at least 50%. The steel boss replied that he didn't have a problem of 'knowing' rather that he had a problem of 'doing' what had to be done and that if he could show him a way of getting things done better and faster, he'd pay him plenty for that information. Lee said he would give him the solutions he needed in under twenty minutes and that if he would try it out for a few weeks he could then pay him what he thought it was worth. Seeing this as an offer he couldn't, or shouldn't refuse, he told Lee to go ahead and this, in essence, is what he advised: 1. Take a clean sheet of paper. 2. Write down the SIX most important things you have to do tomorrow. 3. Put them in order of their importance. 4. Put the paper in your pocket and tomorrow morning start with item one. 5. Once you have done this, pass onto item two, and so on. 6. If you have to pass on an item for reasons outside your control, roll it over to the next day and get on with the next. 7. Make this your daily routine until it becomes a habit. If you don't achieve your objectives by this method, you can be sure you won't achieve them by any other. The whole interview took something less than 30 minutes; they shook hands and parted on the basis of Lee's suggestions. The president used Lee's idea, and had his departmental managers and foremen use it too. After a few weeks Lee got a letter thanking him in glowing terms for his idea and he included a cheque for $25.000 for Lee's half an hours work. When they met again years later, the president admitted to Lee that it had been, in his opinion, the best investment he'd ever made and that one idea had been largely responsible for his once small steel company becoming a dominating force in the industry. That's how successes of any kind are built, just like skyscrapers, just one brick at a time. Each of these six little tasks, or bricks per day very soon build up a firm foundation, then a ground floor, then a first floor and so on until, before you know it, you've got a skyscraper ! The other big point here is that the accomplishment of each little task, each tiny act of heroism, is seen as a mini-success which fuels your confidence, builds a bigger fire under your desires and motivates you towards ever higher levels of achievement. Do not be deceived by the apparent simplicity of these principles. The key words are DECISION and ACTION. Together, these are the only antidotes to that mind crippling affliction called FEAR, which stands in the way of true leadership and success in any field. It doesn't matter how slow you go at the start, but make a start. Small consistent daily steps will get you further, faster than you think if you read, study and apply the simple principles as they are outlined above. You will become the person they seek out in times of trouble, who knows just what to do and how to do it. That person, leading the field.
