The culture, history and politics of the Mi'kmaq People today
is the direct result of the treaties our ancestors signed many
generations ago. An example would be the 1610 Concordat between
the Holy See and the Mi'kmaq signed by Grand Chief Membertou.
Many of us would not be speaking the Mi'kmaq language today were
it not for this agreement because the Roman Catholic
Church was then obligated to translate thier bible and various
cathecisms into the Mi'kmaq language. These booklets were used
through-out Mi'kmaq country to teach us of the European Spirit (Christianity)
but at the same time, it helped to keep our language alive all these years.
The Mi'kmaq People were one of the first of the North American
Indian Nations to encounter the europeans when they landed on
this continent in the 1400's and earlier. We were also one of
the first People to strike up agreements, covenants, and hence,
treaties with them in an effort to live in peace & friendship.
Mi'kmaq Treaties pre-date the confederation of Canada.
