MI'KMAQ 101
|
'Pjila'si means *make yourself at home*
The spelling of MI'KMAQ
Mi'kmaq is the correct or standardized way of spelling the name
of our People, and it is pronounced (Meeg maq). The letter K
sounds a bit more like a G instead of a K, and the letter Q
is a guttural sound (articulated in the throat) instead of the
hard Q sound.
The apostrophe is used in some Mi'kmaq ORTHOGRAPHY to denote
2 distinct sounds. An opostrophe after a
vowel means the long sound of that vowel. An apostrophe before
words that begin with a constonant cluster such as in 'PJILA'SI,
indicates the very slight presence of a back unrounded vowel,
represented elsewhere by the letter é.

Info Sheet: The Mi'kmaq
The First Nations People of Nova Scotia are known as the
Mi'kmaq. At the time of first contact with European explorers
in the 16th and 17th centuries the Mi'kmaq lived in the region
now known as the Maritime provinces and the Gaspé peninsula.
Later they also settled in New England and Newfoundland.
The Mi'kmaq called themselves L'nu'k, meaning "the people".
The term Mi'kmaq comes from their word nikmak, meaning
"my kin-friends".
